LEARNING SUPPORT DEPARTMENT           

 

 

STUDY SKILLS:   The itinerant teacher is available for those students who have been tested and identified as having a Learning Disability.  Some of the duties of the itinerant teacher include helping students study for tests, helping students take tests and quizzes, organizing their work, helping students complete homework assignments, helping with reports and research papers, and keeping contact with their regular classroom teachers in order to monitor their progress.

 

English – 9th,10th,11th,12th grades: These courses cover the Pennsylvania academic standards of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.  The courses in this sequence will emphasize practical English skills, writing, spelling and vocabulary.  Some major skills stem from using books, using the library and passing tests to smart shopping, applying for jobs and all other aspects of independent living.    English usage for citizens, recreation and personal expression will also be emphasized.  Learning Support students participate in the regular education classrooms of English 9,10,11, and 12.  Students will be included in the regular classroom and supported by the Learning Support Teacher.

 

Social Studies 9th,10th,11th, 12th grades: These courses cover the Pennsylvania academics standards of History, Government, and Economics.  Learning Support students participate in the regular education classrooms of American History I, American History II, World History and Geography, and Government/Economics.  Students will be included in the regular classroom and supported by the Learning Support Teacher.  Curricular adaptations and modifications are in accordance with each students Individualized Education Plan.  Please refer to the Social Studies Department for course descriptions. 

Science – 9th,10th,11th, grades:  These courses cover the Pennsylvania academics standards for Science and Technology.  Learning Support students participate in the regular education Physical Science, Biology and Environmental Science classes.  Students will be included in the regular education classroom and supported by the Learning Support Teacher.  Curricular adaptations and modifications are in accordance with each students Individualized Education Plan  Please refer to the Science Department for course descriptions.

 

Math - 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grades: These courses cover the Pennsylvania academics standards for Math.  7th grade - Saxon, 8th grade - Saxon, 9th - 12th

 

Reading - 9th, 10th, 11th grades:  These courses cover the Pennsylvania academic standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.  This course uses the SRA Direct Instruction Reading Program for all Learning Support students to help improve their reading levels. 

 

Community Based Vocational Training - 11th, 12th, grades:  Students participate in on-the-job training in the community in preparation for the transition from high school to adult life.  Credits are earned toward graduation requirements.
