The following courses cover the Pennsylvania academic standards for Arts and Humanities.
PRINCIPLES
OF ART:
This class introduces students to a variety of visual art media and techniques. Students will learn basic art terminology, with an emphasis on understanding the Elements (Line, Shape, Color, Form, Space, Value & Texture) & Principles (Contrast, Emphasis, Balance, Pattern, Movement, Unity & Rhythm) of Design. Students will study how artists throughout history & from all over the world applied these principles to create artwork.
PAINTING:
Students will explore a variety of painting techniques in the traditional media of acrylics, watercolors and oils. Students will also experiment with more advanced media, including digital technologies and video. Students will also study the lives of recognized painters and learn to identify different styles of painting.
DRAWING & COMPOSITION: grades 9-12
Students will explore in depth a variety of drawing media and techniques including pencil, pastel and other color media, charcoal and inks. Using the textbook "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain", student will learn how to see objects and people and draw them accurately. Drawings will progress from simple line drawings to full value, highly detailed drawings. Perspective (drawing objects three dimensionally) and Figure Drawing will be covered. Students will also explore how artists have used similar techniques throughout time.
INTRO TO VISUAL ARTS AND DANCE: 10 grade only --
In this course, students will explore the Visual Arts & Dance through a variety of activities that stress production, criticism and the history of the art forms. Students will learn how the arts can be used as a powerful form of expression, research job opportunties in the arts and study how the arts impact their lives.
